About Nuno Marques
Nuno Marques, acclaimed Portuguese pianist and Yamaha Artist, is one of the most sought-after musicians of his generation. He has established a successful international career from his current base in New York City, where he is the founder and artistic director of Porto Pianofest, an annual international piano festival held in his native country, Portugal. Nuno's versatility as a musician is evident in his ease and comfort in performing solo, chamber music, teaching, and collaborating with other art forms.
Nuno Marques established Porto Pianofest in 2016 with the aim of supporting the new generation of pianists and bringing the greatest mentors and musicians to his homeland. The festival has quickly gained international recognition, expanding its activity to the USA in New York City and Washington DC, and Europe in Madrid and Paris.
As a soloist, Nuno Marques has performed with several orchestras worldwide, including the Orquestra do Norte- Portugal, Artave Orchestra, Orchestra for Myanmar, where he participated in a humanitarian project with young musicians from the Rohingya minority, and others. He has also recorded for Antena2 Radio Portugal and Centro Atlântico Editora, and is a founding member of prizewinning chamber music ensembles, with whom he has performed and recorded extensively throughout Europe. Nuno has a keen interest in contemporary music, having commissioned and premiered numerous works for solo piano and ensemble, performing with leading contemporary music ensembles.
Nuno Marques has graced some of the most renowned music halls and festivals worldwide, including Europe, Asia, and the US, where he has played twice at Carnegie Hall. He has toured China twice, giving public masterclasses in Portugal, Spain, Serbia's World Piano Congress, Myanmar, China, and the US.
Nuno Marques holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree (DMA) from Rutgers University, where he studied with Min Kwon. He is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, where he studied with Artur Pizarro, and holds a Master's Degree in piano performance from the Royal College of Music, London, with Niel Immelman, and a second Master's degree in Instrumental Pedagogy from the Aveiro University in Portugal. He moved to New York to attend NYU- the Steinhardt School, under the tutelage of José Ramón Méndez, where he was awarded the prestigious Reinhold Scholarship and taught classes at the NYU piano department.
Throughout his career, Nuno Marques has worked with renowned pianists such as Lazar Berman, Irina Zaritzkaya, Vitaly Margoulis, Alexander Kobrin, and Dominique Weber, and in chamber music settings with Bernard Greenhouse (Beaux Arts Piano Trio), Takacs Quartet, Florestan Piano Trio, Gary Hoffman, and Ilia Grubert. He has won prizes at piano competitions in London and Portugal, with his studies sponsored by the European Union (Dfes), NYU-Reinhold Foundation, Fundação Gulbenkian, and the AAMSL.
Nuno Marques is a pianist at the prestigious American Ballet Theatre, America's national dance company, and has been a guest pianist at New York City Ballet. He is also the Music Director of Stars of American Ballet, a dance company that brings together principal dancers and soloists from major American companies, offering world-class performances. Nuno has toured the Middle East, Hungary, Portugal, and the USA with Stars of American Ballet.
He is also a co-founder of Atlantic Collective, an adaptive, flexible chamber ensemble of international artists performing concert music that explores social and cultural themes.
This season, Nuno Marques plans to perform solo recitals, chamber music performances, and masterclasses in the US and Europe.
